New English Requirements for Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 482)

From 13 September 2025, new English language requirements apply to the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 482). These changes aim to streamline assessment standards and bring consistency across approved English tests. If you are planning to apply for a Subclass 482 visa, it’s essential to understand the updated requirements and whether you qualify for an exemption.

Who Needs to Meet the English Requirement?

All applicants for the Subclass 482 visa must demonstrate English language proficiency, unless they fall into one of the exempt categories, such as:

  • Citizens of Canada, New Zealand, Ireland, the UK, or the USA with a valid passport.
  • Applicants who have completed at least 5 years of full-time study in English at secondary or higher education institutions.

Approved English Tests

From 13 September 2025, the following tests are accepted for Subclass 482 applications:

  • IELTS Academic or General Training
  • PTE Academic
  • TOEFL iBT
  • OET (Occupational English Test)
  • CELPIP General
  • LanguageCert Academic
  • Michigan English Test (MET)

Each test has specific minimum scores that must be achieved in all four components (listening, reading, writing, speaking).

PMEC Tips for Applicants

  • Book your test early – Test dates may fill up quickly in major cities.
  • Double-check exemptions – You might not need a test if you meet nationality or study-based exemptions.
  • Submit valid results – Ensure your results are less than 3 years old at the time of application.
  • Plan ahead – Failing to meet the English requirement can result in a refusal, so prepare early.
  • Consider test preparation – Many test centers offer preparation courses to help you achieve the required scores.
